Art k-2

Quarter 1, Week 2, 2017
“See, Think, Wonder”:  Kinder, First, Second and Third Grade
·       Each class will start by looking at a different example of artwork. 
·       K-3 will draw a quick sketch of the image of artwork. In addition, second and third graders will take brief notes, labeling their drawing.  (What they SEE)
·       After silently looking at the artwork, thinking about what it represents, and forming some questions about the work, we will discuss as a class.
o   SEE (Elements of Art)
o   THINK (Personal Opinion)
o   WONDER (Further consider the context and content of the artwork and feelings expressed by artist, as well as the artist’s motivations)


Kinder and First Grade:
We completed a paper cut out and colored collage based off of “The Snail”, by Matisse

We also read “Henri’s Scissors” and learned how to draw stars, as illustrated in the children’s book.
This upcoming week we will read “The Shape of Things” and create another cut-paper collage, replicating the illustrations in the text.

First Grade:

Second and Third Grade:
Students began self-portraits:
We learned about proportions of the face.

We made blind contour drawings of our hands and learned about this exercise by looking at other student work (online examples) as well as a hand study by Albrecht Durer

PE week 3 grades k-6

The year seems to be flying by so fast, with all the wonderful new students (and old), the new school, and all the SPACE.  I have really enjoyed the first two weeks and looking forward rest of the year.  First and foremost I want you to know that your children are more then welcome to wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen while outside for PE.  The duration of time outside will not exceed 40 minutes.  The first week we had to make some changes while we were waiting for all of our new PE equipment to arrive.  I am sure by now you have heard of the scooters, colorful balls and all the bowling pins.  Last week for grades k-2 we played a game called Battleship.  The students got to roll around on scooters collecting balls for their battleship while the battleship was throwing balls at other battleships trying to sink them.  They were actually throwing balls at the 60 bowling pins in the room.    This week for grades K-2 we are learning skills necessary to be an excellent dodgeball player.  We are working on catching and throwing the ball "with our eyes open"!  Once we have worked on our skills we will put them to the test by playing different variations of Dodgeball.

Last week grades 3-6 were learning skills necessary to be an excellent dodgeball player.  They were learning how to throwing and catch a ball while taking aim at cones and trying to knock them over.  Then they played different variations of dodgeball.  This week they are working on their gross motor skills.  The game they are playing in called National Park day.  They have turned it into an obstacle course and the kids are racing against each other while trying to master the skills of balancing, crawling, and scooting.

Please put on your calendars that Field Day will take place on November 9 for grades k-4 and November 10 for grades 5-6.

This week (3) in music with Miss Caranto:




            Kindergarten will continue internalizing the beat through review of various chants and simple songs. They are learning a new song about “Johnny” who works with many hammers. 1st Grade is reviewing the following musical terms through known songs: forte, piano, rhythm, and phrases. 2nd Grade is reviewing the following musical terms: quarter note, quarter rest, and eighth notes; they are also practicing their “detective skills” by finding errors in rhythms of known songs.

Week 3 Music 5-6

5th – This week in music  theory 5th grade is exploring rhythm and meter as we review simple durations and time signatures. In music history we will continue to examine the works of Domenico Scarlatti.

6th – This week in music theory 6th grade will begin to explore dotted rhythmic values as well as the foundational pattern inherent in the major scale. In in music history we will discover the operatic work of Antonio Vivaldi as we begin to make the distinction between Opera Seria and Opera Buffa.

In K-2 music this week, 1st and 2nd grade will continue to review songs, musical concepts, and singing games from last year. In Kindergarten, students will continue practicing important procedures, as well as learning simple melodies and chants accompanied by kinesthetic experiences of movement to the beat.
