Course Description

Physical Education at Great Hearts Northern Oaks strives to help students understand how sports, fitness, and nutrition will help instill important virtues in their lives. The main purpose of this course is for students to cultivate and maintain a passionate and healthy competitive spirit, moderated by the understanding that competition is “with one another,” and not “against one another,” in the pursuit of excellence.  In Physical Education, students acquire the knowledge and skills for movement that provide the foundation for enjoyment, continued social development through physical activity, and access to a physically-active lifestyle.  Overall, this course hopes to create Great Hearted Athletes who are willing to compete enthusiastically, and joyfully, while also having the knowledge necessary to explain different technical movements, rules of the games, and to control their bodies in movement.

Course Overview

As a Kindergartener, your child will attend PE for a total of 40 minutes with a minimum of two days a week.  Students are not required to dress out and will participate wearing their required school attire. Your child may wear sun glasses, hat, and sunscreen while participating in PE outside.  During the school year we will learn about the muscles and movement patterns.  The students will be able to observe and describe the immediate effects of physical activity on their heart and lungs and the importance of good nutritional habits.  We will also touch on various sports such as volleyball, football, baseball, soccer, dance, jump rope and hula-hoop.

Expectations of Students

Respect is the key word for our expectations. Respect is a physical reality that comes from students’ behaviors, attitudes, and participation. To help create an environment of respect, we hold our students accountable for the following expectations:

1.     Voice Discipline – one person speaking at a time; either the teacher or the person called on by the teacher.
2.     Follow instructions quickly and precisely; take pride and attention to detail
3.     Participate enthusiastically in class discussion, drills, games, and competitions
4.     Compete to seek excellence together with your teammates and your competition
5.     Win and lose with dignity; meanness will not be tolerated
6.   If your child is unable to participate due an injury or illness, please email me directly or send an excuse   or doctors note.
