3rd and 4th Grade Music
Week of  December 11

This week is the Winter Concert!  Please see the following information previously sent home in a letter and posted in the last newsletter!

The Great Hearts Northern Oaks Winter Concert is quickly approaching. We would love for families to attend! Please note that the date of the concert is Thursday, December 14th at 6:00 PM (K-3) and 7:45 PM (4-7). The concert will be held at Summit Christian Center, 2575 Marshall Rd., San Antonio, TX – 78259.

All sections of each grade will be performing together as a choir, and each grade’s performance is about 10 minutes long. Concert length of Grades K-3 is approximately 45 minutes long, and the concert of Grades 4-7 is about 1 hour long. Students are required to stay for the entire length of their concert (e.g. Kindergarteners, 1st graders, and 2nd graders are required to stay until after 3rd graders are done performing), because they will be graded on not just their performance but also on their concert etiquette. Students are to wear Concert Dress Attire as stated in the Family Handbook. This means boys should wear black shoes and socks, black slacks, black belt, a white oxford style shirt, and a tasteful tie or bow tie preferably in school colors (no pop culture or music ties). Girls should wear black dress shoes (no high heels), black skirt (knee-length or longer), a white blouse (no halter tops or spaghetti straps), and appropriate under-garments.

All K-3 students are asked to be at the church by 5:30 PM to warm-up and prepare for the performance. As students arrive, we will mark their attendance. Warm-up for K-3 will begin at 5:35, so please be prompt. Doors will open for K-3 parents at 5:50 PM. All 4-7 students should arrive at 7:15 PM. Warm-up for 4-7 will begin promptly at 7:20 PM. Doors will open for 4-7 parents at 7:35 PM. We kindly ask that parents be respectful of the posted door times.

Art - Mr. Donoho - Grade 4th - 6th

It's the last week before winter break!  Here's the plan for next week's art class:
4th Grade:
The students now have a better understanding of how to make 3-d shapes, but how does a person shade them?  This week we'll be covering how to shade in a sphere, because if you understand how the light works, you'll understand shading that much better.

5th Grade:
For 5th grade, the classes that aren't still working on the Van Gogh Portraits are moving on to studying Albrecht Durer, whose rendering of animals is legendary.  We'll be studying how to create the textures of fur, feather and claw with pencil, but we'll first need to draw the animals.  By using the gridding technique, students will begin the preliminary grid drawing, so after the break we can dive right into it.

6th Grade:
We're still working on finishing the MC Escher Spheres ((I know, it's taken a while, but look up MC Escher's "3 Spheres II".  We're trying to render that whole thing by hand with just pencil!)).  After this, the students will all have improved exponentially at shading.

Art - Mrs. Northway - Grades k-3rd

Quarter 2, Week 5, 2017                                                                                                            Northway Art K-3

Kindergarten:  Element of Art – Value
Students created value scales this week with both crayons and also tempera paint.
Students learned how to mix a medium value with equal amounts of black and white tempera paint, trying their best to paint in circles of white,  grey and black paint.
We will continue looking at Bruegel’s Hunters in the Snow to paint trees with different values next week.
First Grade:  Element of Art – Texture
Students began “frottage” texture rubbing this week by using collected elements from nature (leaves, branches, rocks).  We are discussing texture and the difference between organic and non-organic materials and their textures; for example, the texture of leaves in contrast to the texture of brick or cement.
We also looked at images of traditional Japanese “Gyotaku” prints and the art work of Max Ernst.
Consequently, this week, we learned a little bit of French, Japanese and German words in our research of texture rubbing techniques.

Second Grade:  Element of Art – Shape; Value
Students are drawing Doric, Ionic and Corinthian columns.  In addition to the columns, we (or I) decided to stack various animals on top of these columns, playing around with the scale of the animals and the way they are “stacked”..…because it is fun to balance things on top of one another.  (Often there were sculptures on top of ancient Greek columns).
To decide which animals to draw, students chose their favorite animals, wrote the name on a piece of paper and we picked the names out of a bag.
This animal drawing practice builds on the horse drawing that we did last week.  However, students were working more independently.
Once the column and animals are all outlined with a black felt pen, we will continue drawing background foliage with green colored pencils and finish everything with some watercolors of different values.

Third: Element of Art – Texture
Students worked on a paper relief sculpture “sampler”, using different cutting and folding techniques.  Next week, students will choose one technique and create a 12x12”panel using only one technique, creating a unique three dimensional texture.
These panels will be combined to create a textural paper relief sculptue using an analogous color scheme of yellow-green, yellow and yellow-orange.
