Art - Mr. Donoho - 4th - 6th Grade

This week, the fourth grade will learn more about shading while the fifth and sixth graders will use the gridding technique to do the drawings for their big projects.

Fourth Grade:  Last week, we covered the fundamentals of shading by shading slowly, softly, and in small places.  This week, we will cover a different kind of shading using parallel lines called hatching and cross-hatching.  In the past, artists didn't have the option of printing in hundreds of tones, and had to carve countless lines on woodblocks to make the illusion of tone.  We will be using this technique for a larger project, where students will use 6 different tones of hatching and cross-hatching to make a finished project

Fifth Grade:  This week we are continuing to use the grid to draw our master copies.  A grid allows a student to draw a large drawing from a smaller one by focusing on one box of the grid at a time, ensuring that the overall image is correct proportionally.  We are drawing portraits by Vincent Van Gogh on 9x12 Bristol paper.

Sixth Grade:
The Sixth Graders are also using a grid to draw MC Eschers "Three Spheres 2".  The sixth graders will use their new shading techniques to render Escher's 3 spheres in a realistic and smooth way using the same technique that is taught to the fourth (and Ninth!) grade.
